Leatherman
Leatherman and Badrock
Overview
Named for a 19th century teamster (Harry Leatherman), Leatherman Peak in the Lost River Range is the 2nd highest Peak in Idaho and is one of the illustrious Idaho 12ers. Unlike so many other peaks that are hidden from view, Leatherman boldly stands out.
Leatherman View
There are 2 standard routes on Leatherman, both are class 3, and both are challenging. The front side route (Southwest) is accessed from Sawmill gulch and poses an 8 mile RT climb and 5,000 vertical feet. The backside route (East Ridge) is generally accessed from the Pahsimeroi drainage, it poses an 8 mile hike but only about 4,000 vertical feet of climbing.
Mount Corruption from the drive in on the east side...
Leatherman is seldom climbed due to the long approaches and proximity to Borah, Idaho' s highest peak.
Directions
The following directions are to get the "backside" trailhead. Be prepared for a long dusty and bumpy drive that is well worth the effort.
From Mackay, drive north on US 93 for 22 miles, where you will turn right onto the Doublespring Pass Road. After about 8 miles on this gravel road you will see a sign identifying "Horseheaven Pass" turn right onto that road. Follow this bumpy road for a while before dipping into the Mahoghany Creek drainage.
Horse Heaven Pass
About a mile before the West Fork Pahsimeroi turnoff, you pass Ferd’s cabin and corral. Turn right (west) at the signed West Fork Pahsimeroi turnoff and follow a very bumpy road for 3 miles where it will dead end at the trailhead. Here you will find some great camping and a nice stream.
Red Tape
There are no permits required to climb, park, drive, breathe, nothing but a sense of adventure and some common sense.
Trent on Leatherman
When To Climb
The mountain is typically climbed from the middle of June through the middle of September. Although winter climbs are accomplished and the bowl to the north will provide some incredible skiing.
Camping
Camping is allowed and there are some great campsites in the Pahsimeroi basin.
Camping on the Sawmill Gulch side is rockier and tougher to get a good spot, but it is available.
